PAST  EVENTS

Thursday, April 12, 2007

Location: Ming Wah Restaurant, 920 Baker Avenue at Walton Way near Richmond Academy, Augusta GA

Speaker: James N. Brooke, PhD, PE, PMP

Presentation: Our Challenge: Significantly Improve the Flowsheet at a Kaolin Processing Plant

Attendees will help identify flowsheet improvements and estimate their quantitative impacts. The estimates will be developed real-time using an existing flowsheet model developed by a Clemson graduate student. The model uses the EXTEND discrete modeling program. We would like to improve recovery, lower energy use, lower water use, lower stack emissions, et cetera. Perhaps new unit operations are needed? Can we meet this challenge, or are we too out of practice? An abridged version of the Masters Thesis which documented this work may be obtained from jnbrooke@mail.gforcecable.com.

Thursday, March 15, 2007

Location:  Lone Star Cafe, 2744 Washington Road, Augusta GA

Presentation:  Georgia's "White Gold" - Kaolin Clay: Past, Present, and Future. About twenty years ago kaolin (commonly known as china clay) was being produced at the rate of around 8 million tons per year by eight to ten major suppliers in Georgia. Today production has fallen to about 5 million tons per year from four suppliers. Pressures from other white minerals (ground and precipitated calcium carbonate in particular) and huge new kaolin operations in Brazil have combined to cause the "Gold" to lose some of its glitter. Nonetheless, kaolin suppliers have developed new products to meet the demands of a changing marketplace. Tom will talk about what is being done to remain competitive in this environment.

Speaker:  Thomas Hilderbrand is a senior process engineer with Thiele Kaolin Company in Sandersville, Ga. He joined Thiele in 1981 after graduating with a B. S. in chemical engineering from Clemson University. His laboratory work in the fatty-acid flotation of anatase from kaolin clay led to pilot studies of the process and the eventual creation of the pilot plant at Thiele.

Other areas of Tom's mineral processing work include development of anatase flotation with hydroxamate collectors, cryogenic magnetic separation, membrane filtration, and centrifugation.

Tom is a member of SME (Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration, Inc.) and is Treasurer and Past Chairman for our local section of AIChE.

POSTER BOARD CONSTRUCTION PARTY.   Help build poster boards for SERMACS on Saturday, September 16 from 9 am to 2 pm at John Steimke’s house in North Augusta.  We need to make 19 more poster boards and they are about 6 ft high and 6 ft wide.  Posters can be thumbtacked to both sides.  John already has a finished prototype for a total of twenty.  All of the wood will be pre-cut and partially assembled.  The work on that day will be final assembly with screws and power screwdriver, light sanding with a palm sander, blowing off dust with compressed air, priming all surfaces with roller or spray gun and finally painting the frames green.

Wear clothes that you can get paint on.  John Steimke will provide sandwiches and drinks.  John’s address is 1829 Robinson Drive, North Augusta, 803-442-9944.  Robinson Drive is off Martintown Road (exit 1 from I-20), 1.5 miles south of the interstate.
